In 1964. Theodor Geisel--known to the world as Dr. Seuss--and his fellow editors at Beginner Books put together a dictionary.  

It had a serious purpose: to help beginning readers recognize, remember, and really enjoy words using a basic 1,350-item vocabulary. 

It was also seriously silly.  The average child, they had discovered, seemed to like things that way.

It was The Cat in the Hat Beginner Book Dictionary.  And it began to make using a dictionary...actually fun!
