The Rise of Silas Lapham
Lillian Sabine adapted William Dean Howell's (1837-1920) novel, The Rise of Silas Lapham, for the stage in 1919. Silas earns a fortune, but lacks social standing which he tries to attain by marrying his daughter to an aristocrat. Although he later loses his money, he makes the right moral choices in the end.
